The Parti Quebecois won Quebec's election with 59 of 127 seats but just 28 per cent of the vote, the lowest share ever for a winning party in the province. Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, a 49-year-old former lawyer, promised to hold an independence referendum and said he would wait until US President Donald Trump leaves office before holding the vote.
Independence support has fallen to 30 per cent, near record lows. Previous independence referendums in 1980 and 1995 both failed.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he wants to work together. The PQ plans to resist federal immigration, cut monarchy ties, and block a high-speed rail link with Ontario.
