Six volcanoes erupted in rapid succession across Indonesia, rare even in one of the world's most volcanically active regions. Ash, including from Anak Krakatau about 150 kilometres away, reached parts of the Indonesian capital and spread across Java and Sumatra.
More than 340,000 passengers were affected and thousands of flights disrupted. Anak Krakatau remains at alert level with a three-kilometre exclusion zone.
Scientists say the simultaneous eruptions were coincidence, not a chain reaction.
