Cattle producers to pay $1 more per head from 2028, if reforms deliver

Cattle Australia wants to raise the Cattle Transaction Levy from $5 to $6 per head by July 2028. This increase depends on accountability reforms being in place by July 2027.

Cattle producers could face a $1 increase in the per-head levy on cattle sales. This would be the first rise since 2009.

Cattle Australia's review committee released its recommendation on October 6. It surveyed producers and held more than 34 face-to-face consultations across regional Australia.

The $1 would fund more spending on residue testing, research and development, and marketing. Cattle Australia's proposal has a critical condition.

The increase only happens if accountability reforms are put in place first. The committee's report stated there had been drift, disengagement and loss of trust.

Producers demanded greater transparency before paying more. Reforms must be shown to work by 2027.
