NSW domestic violence charges reached a record 73 per cent in just two years.
Domestic violence charge rates in NSW have reached an all-time high. The rate of domestic violence assaults resulting in charges rose to 73 per cent in just the past two years, up from 67 per cent.
The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research found most of the spike in charges related to breaches of apprehended violence orders and intimidation offences. New police technology can detect intimidation over the phone.
Increased police focus on domestic violence also contributed to the rise. Bureau director Jackie Fitzgerald warned that experts don't yet know if these tactics reduce long-term domestic violence.
She flagged a risk: victims often face heightened threat during the period after they report to police. Similar increases appeared in driving and drug possession charges, largely from improved police detection.
