Jaymie Graham steps away from AFL at 25 to raise his kids
Graham chose early retirement over chasing a career elsewhere to stay with his newborn son and five-year-old sister in his care.
Jaymie Graham played 37 games over four years for the Eagles before stepping away at 25. Graham's contract had one year left, but he played only six games this season due to injuries and knew more opportunities would be scarce.
Rather than chase a spot at another club, he quit to work for an earth-moving company in Perth. Earlier this year he became a father to son Hudson.
Six months before that, he and partner Kasey took his five-year-old sister Candy into their home. The football routine of set sleep times and morning rituals became impossible with young kids depending on him.
Graham said he felt comfortable with his choice: "I did all that I could." Caring for Candy meant he would not move interstate and disrupt her life again after she had finally found stability.
