Eighteen-year-old Kamilaroi artist unveils 8-metre Port of Newcastle mural
Kamilaroi artist Alliyah Bromell unveiled an eight-metre mural depicting connections between water and land at the Port of Newcastle.
Alliyah Bromell is a Kamilaroi artist from Branxton, 18 years old. On Tuesday, she showed her artwork Ties between water and land at Carrington's Dyke Point.
The eight-metre-high mural replaces artwork by Wonnarua artist Saretta Fielding, which has greeted visitors since 2020. Bromell used blue, aqua, gold and brown tones.
These represent the blend of coastal Awabakal culture with Wonnarua traditions. The Wonnarua traditions come from further up the Hunter Valley.
She grew up in these areas. Bromell said she wanted to create a welcoming feeling through colour and warmth.
Bromell started her Indigenous art business, Pearl Dream Painting, at 15. She was named Cessnock City Council's Young Citizen of the Year in 2024.
