Most alcohol bottles lack cancer warnings, study finds
A study checked 6,037 alcohol bottles sold in Australian stores. Only one in four had a voluntary health warning label.
Researchers looked at labels from more than 6,000 alcoholic drinks sold in Sydney. They found a big gap: just one in four had any voluntary warning at all.
Most current warnings only target specific groups like drivers or underage drinkers. None clearly warn about cancer or liver disease.
Yet alcohol is one of Australia's top risk factors for disease. Currently, Australia only requires a pregnancy warning on drinks above 1.15 per cent alcohol.
Everything else is voluntary and largely missing. The UK and Ireland have committed to mandatory warnings.
Australia has no plans to follow. Researchers want clear labels on the front of packages.
These should tell drinkers that even light drinking significantly raises cancer risk.
